Agent status reference
Interpret every Cloud agent badge and know which lifecycle actions are safe in each state.
The Cloud Console normalizes provider-specific states into a consistent lifecycle and adds runtime readiness where available.
Status table
| Status | Meaning | Normal action |
|---|---|---|
| provisioning | Provider resources or first-boot setup are being created. | Wait. |
| starting | A retained VM is powering on. | Wait. |
| running | The provider says the VM is on; runtime health is not confirmed. | Wait for loading or ready. |
| loading | The VM is on and services are still initializing. | Wait; inspect errors if prolonged. |
| ready | Required services are live and responding. | Open the UI or use the agent. |
| stopping | Provider shutdown is in progress. | Wait. |
| stopped | Compute is off and the boot disk remains. | Start, change eligible settings, or terminate. |
| failed | Provisioning did not produce a usable runtime. | Record the error, then delete or contact support. |
| error | A provisioning or lifecycle action has an explicit error. | Record the message and troubleshoot. |
| terminating | VM, disk, networking, and records are being removed. | Wait. |
| terminated | The environment has been deleted or is completing record removal. | No runtime action. |
Provider state versus runtime state
A VM can be running without being ready. The readiness signal comes from the services inside the VM. Use the UI only after readiness unless you are diagnosing bootstrap.
Error display
Provisioning error describes creation or bootstrap. Action error describes a later start, stop, network, schedule, or termination operation. An error can be shown alongside the last known provider state.
Costs by state
Provisioning, starting, running, loading, ready, and stopping can incur compute charges. Stopped agents retain disk charges. Termination ends future direct VM and disk charges after provider cleanup, but delayed usage can still appear later in reconciliation.
